New York Marathon: Peres Jepchirchir and Albert Korir on top

Peres Chepchirchir has made history after winning the New York City Marathon as part of the World Marathon Major on Sunday 7 November. She covered the 42.195 km of the 2nd oldest marathon in 2h22mn39s. Jepchirchir thus won the 50th edition, just three months after her victory at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The two-time world half-marathon champion thus becomes the first woman to win a major marathon after the Olympics. It was a great performance by the 28-year-old at the New York marathon, which until then had been dominated by her compatriot Mary Keitany, the four-time winner of the tournament.

Jepchirchir took the lead in the last kilometre, outperforming her two challengers, compatriot Viola Cheptoo who came second (2h2mn44s) and Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh, third with a time of 2h22mn52.

Korir Triumphs, Bekele struggles
Another Kenyan triumphed at the New York marathon: Albert Korir won the men's race with a time of 2h8mn22s. This was his first victory in a World Marathon Major. A great performance from the 27-year-old runner who took second place in the previous edition. He beat Moroccan Mohamed El Aaraby (2h09mn06s) and Italian Eyob Faniel (2h09mn52s)

The headliner of this marathon Kenenisa Bekele was almost non-existent. The Ethiopian legend broke down completely from the 10th kilometre. The 39 year old runner had to settle for sixth place with a time of 2h12mn52. This was Bekele's second race of the season after the Berlin marathon where he finished third.
