CAF responds to developments in Kenya after arrest of Football President Mwendwa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has said it is keenly following developments in Kenya following the alleged arrest of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President.

Nicholas Kithuku Mwendwa was arrested on November 12th by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) two days after Kenya's Sports Ministry created a caretaker committee to run the Federation for six months.

The development comes after the Kenyan government through the Cabinet Secretary put in place an Inspection Committee to undertake an inspection of FKF from October 18th to November 5th, 2021.

After the government of Kenya announced a caretaker Committee, FIFA was quick to respond.

In a letter signed by Kenny Jean-Marie, the FIFA Chief member Associations Officer and sent to FKF, he pointed out that the world football governing body is is willing to hold a meeting with the FKF and the Ministry of Sports as soon as possible so as to address any concerns both sides may have, and there after decide on a way forward for the sake of Kenyan football.

CAF has said they are deeply concerned about the situation in Kenya and the manner in which the situation is unfolding.

“In addition, CAF has also noted the letter from FIFA to the Government authorities in Kenya on the concerns regarding the independence of the Football Kenya Federation highlighted in recent weeks. CAF supports the position of FIFA on the matter and will avail itself to meet relevant stakeholders in Kenya to discuss solutions to the current impasse in this regard.''

CAF made it clear that they are committed to good governance in African football administration. “CAF together with FIFA are monitoring the situation,” added the CAF communication.

In October last year Mwendwa was re-elected Football Kenya Federation as the president for another new four-year term during a Special Elective General Assembly held at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.

Mwendwa garnered 77 votes, beating closest competitor Lordvick Aduda who managed five votes while Herbert Mwachiro only had three. Boniface Osano and Dan Mule did not get any votes.
