Mondial Hand: Portes remains Algeria's coach

Alain Portes, coach of the Algerian handball team

The French coach of the Algerian selection, Alain Portes, continues with "Les Fennecs", in spite of its catastrophic results at the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship. "Les Fennecs" suffered five defeats in the competition which is being hold in Egypt. Algeria lost to Iceland (24-39), Portugal (19-26), France (26-29), Norway (23-36) and Switzerland (24-27). But the Algerian men's national team won over Morocco (24-23) in this Championship.

"When I take a team in hand, my aim is to build and structure a sports project. For now, I feel good with this group and I intend to continue the adventure with Algeria", says Portes. He displays the ambition to "build and structure a sustainable future" for Algerian handball.

The French technician has been leading the Algerian men's national handball team for a year and a half. He managed to hoist Algeria on the third step of the podium of the CAN-2020, which took place in Tunisia. That allowed Algeria to get back to the World Cup after missing the 2017 and 2019 editions.

Regarding the performance of Messaoud Berkous teamates, the coach of "Les Fennecs" believes that his players were "in panic" during the first match against Morocco. Because of the "lack of competition" caused by the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), says Portes.

"Fortunately, we managed to reverse the trend in the second half to snatch victory, which allowed us to move on to the main round," says Alain Portes. "I think the match against France is our reference match at the World Cup. It was a great moment, the players were respectful, applying the instructions on the field," he concludes.Souhil RACIM
