L’Afrique a remporté trente-sept médailles aux JO 2021 bouclés ce dimanche 8 août avec le marathon remporté par le Kényan Eliud Kipchoge. La moisson concerne huit disciplines, treize pays et dix-sept femmes. Elle est cependant moins bonne qu’à Rio 2016 (45).

Mais depuis vingt ans, c’est quantitativement la troisième meilleure récolte. En dehors du rendez-vous pékinois (2008) et donc brésilien, les athlètes africains ont réalisé à Tokyo leurs meilleures performances depuis Sydney 2000. Dans la ville australienne, comme à Londres (2012) et à Athènes (2004), ils ont obtenu 35 podiums.

Au regard des événements qui ont entouré ou précédé la compétition, on peut dire que l’Afrique aurait probablement pu mieux faire. Entre les suspensions, pour dopage, les déclassements, pour hyperandrogénie, et les disqualifications, pour différentes raisons, le continent a, en effet, perdu quelques chances de médailles.
